The GMEA – National Center for Music Creation of Albi-Tarn was founded in 1981. Among eight other centres in France, it is part of a network certified by the French Ministry of Culture. A leading organisation for musical creation in Occitanie, the GMEA welcomes ensembles and musicians for rehearsals, research, experiments and recordings.
As part of the Ministry of Culture’s revival project, the GMEA is issuing a call for project proposals for 4 composers and 8 performers. EXPERIENCES aims to allow young professional artists to take a creative project from conception to completion in optimal artistic, technical and logistical conditions. The composers and musical performers who are selected will work under the guidance of 2 composers - Jean-Luc Guionnet and Catherine Lamb - and 2 musical performers from the Dedalus Ensemble, who will take part in the selection process as well as in the entire process of creating the piece.
4 composers will be commissioned to create a 15-minute piece for 10 musicians. The precise line up will be communicated to the winning candidates at the end of the selection process. The works can be written in traditional, graphic or verbal notation. Particular attention will be paid to the composers’ experimental approach as well as their ability to include the musical performers’ specialties. 8 musical performers will be hired to take part in the creations with 2 musicians from the Dedalus Ensemble. Familiarity with experimental expression (extended technique, microtonality, solfegic, graphic, and verbal notations) is recommended. All types of instruments (acoustic, electric and electronic) and voices are welcome. The winning composers and musical performers and their advisors will meet for a one-week artist residency in Albi from 1-6 August 2022. At the end of this time period, the works will be performed in public at an artist-in-residency concert.
Composers will receive a flat fee of 4000 euros (on copyright notice, including the commission and the session in Albi) and musical performers will be paid a flat fee of 800 euros (for rehearsals and the concert). The GMEA will cover the artists’ travel to Albi (France and Europe), accommodations, and the cost of meals for the duration of the residency.
The age limit for performer applicants is 25 years and for composers is 30 years.
