Genius Loci Weimar is looking for innovative ideas for the projection festival from 5 to 7 September 2025. This year’s theme will be Goethe’s literary masterpiece FAUST.
Genius Loci Weimar expressly encourages short film makers, motion graphic artists, and video and film artists of all disciplines and genres to apply for the selected location with their different aesthetics, animation techniques, and narrative styles.
A strong concept should demonstrate historical awareness, architectural understanding, abstraction and imaginative power, narrative talent, and a clear perspective on the local context. The team can assist with technical implementation during the festival, so professional expertise in video mapping is not a mandatory requirement for participating in the competition. Alongside classic video mappings, new styles and compositions are highly welcome, such as 3D animations, elements from animation, live-action, and short films, as well as illustrative techniques like drawing, paper-cutting, stop-motion, etc.
Two conceptual proposals for the building/object will be awarded by the jury. A budget of 10,000 EUR per awarded submission is available for realisation (i.e. 10,000 EUR for each of the two objects, totalling 20,000 EUR). The winning submissions will be presented in alternation on the building/object during the festival from 5–7 September 2025. At the festival one of the two submissions will be awarded another 5,000 EUR.
