The ‘Roots and Routes’ Residence 2026 is an open call for artists to take part in a residency in Gjirokastra Castle and Luzat village, Albania, within the framework of the MON-ART ‘Monasteries of Art’ project. The residency invites participants to engage with local heritage, communities and landscapes through artistic practice.

The residency is expected to take place for up to two months between 1 August and 30 October 2026.

The programme is organised in the context of the MON-ART project, a Creative Europe-supported initiative focused on transforming historical sites into spaces for artistic production and cultural regeneration. In Gjirokastra, a UNESCO World Heritage city, the project connects cultural heritage with contemporary artistic practices and community engagement. The ‘Roots and Routes’ theme reflects on the relationship between past and present, exploring identity, memory, local traditions and sustainable futures.

The residency supports the development of artistic projects that respond to the local context, encouraging research, experimentation and interaction with local communities. Artists are invited to create work inspired by the cultural and natural environment, contributing to dialogue around heritage and sustainability.

The call is open to artists and cultural practitioners working across disciplines.

In addition to the 1,000 EUR per month artist fee, the residency provides accommodation and working space in the host locations as well as travel costs (up to 100 EUR).
