enoa: Immersive Residencies for Artists Without Significant Opera Experience

enoa logo - name written out with the O replaced by a pink partial circle like a ring of seats.

Aware of the urgent need for the opera world to take part in a necessary culture shift by opening its institutions to achieve true inclusion, enoa – the European network of opera academies – is organising a second immersive residency programme designed to enrich the opera landscape with new narratives and aesthetics. This initiative offers support, mentorship and mobility through tailor-made residencies for mid-career artists without significant opera experience.

The residency programme begins in February 2023 and then runs between February 2023 and spring 2024 (exact timespan/dates to be determined with hosting institutions). It involves three group workshops with the entire cohort of selected applicants, as well as the individual residency with mentoring and support from the host institution.

In total there are eleven hosting institutions:

  • Britten Pears Arts, United-Kingdom
  • Dutch National Opera & ballet, Netherlands
  • Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, France
  • Gulbenkian Foundation, Portugal
  • La Monnaie / De Munt, Belgium
  • Palau de les Art, Spain
  • Operosa, Serbia
  • Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, Belgium
  • Theaterakademie August Everding, Germany
  • Théâtres de la Ville du Luxembourg, Luxembourg
  • Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, Poland

Each resident will benefit from a grant which will cover: international travels and accommodation costs; mentoring or teaching fees (if applicable); activities costs (ie. workshops, tickets to performances, etc.).

Applicants should be experienced artists based in Europe who are highly interested in the development of opera creation / interdisciplinary musical and artistic forms but have no significant opera experience.
