Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest: Artist in Residence Programme 2027 (USA)

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest’s artist in residence programme annually awards artists the opportunity to live and create site-specific work inspired by their total immersion experience in the natural environment.

The residency is open to visual and mixed-media artists, including those working with sound and performance art that incorporates visual elements.

Bernheim recommends a stay of 6–8 weeks, but the residency can be split into two periods, with a minimum of three weeks per period. While full immersion is preferred, flexibility is available.

Artists will create a site-inspired artwork, temporary installation, or project as a donation to the Bernheim Foundation. Recipients are also asked to engage the public with their work and process, which may include demonstrations, workshops, lectures, and participation in one of Bernheim’s programs or annual events.

The programme provides the following:

  • 2,500 USD stipend
  • Furnished, one-bedroom rustic cabin with a full kitchen, bath, and Wi-Fi
  • Modest studio space with good natural light and heating, situated near a 32-acre lake.
  • Support and guidance from Bernheim’s horticulture and operations departments, as well as staff ecologists, scientists, naturalists, and forest managers, are available for Artist-in-Residence projects
  • Access to free or heavily discounted classes, workshops, night walks, and other activities during the residency
  • Participation in high-profile public and private events designed to promote artists and the Arts in Nature programme
