The Vilém Flusser Residency Programme for Artistic Research calls for transdisciplinary artistic research projects that explore emerging social concerns in culture. Artistic research is here understood as an exploration of connections between aesthetics, materiality, and politics. The residency programme is a collaboration between the Vilém Flusser Archive at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK) and the festival transmediale.
For Vilém Flusser, theory and praxis are intrinsically tied to each other. His nomadic thinking was shaped by a philosophy of positions; testing different ways of thinking and connecting different disciplines and methodologies played a significant role in his work. Knowledge production as a dialogue between different standpoints – between science and art, laboratory and applied research, old and new media, local and global forms of organisation – is the guiding principle for the concept of artistic research, which is supported by the Vilém Flusser Residency Programme for Artistic Research.
The two-month residency programme supports proposals for projects and works at different stages of development, from first conceptual steps to significant advancements of already existing projects and works. The jury’s decision is based on the quality of the research proposal, the relation between the work and the questions it addressed in its research, the contextualisation of the work within societal concerns, its feasibility within the two-month timeframe, and the connection to the focus of the Vilém Flusser Residency Programme for Artistic Research.
The period of residency is two months, between May and July 2023. Accepted candidates are required to use the residency at its full length during this time period. The details of the final period will be defined in agreement with the selected resident.
The residency covers:
- Contribution to travel costs to Berlin.
- Residency fee of 1300 EUR per month.
- Workspace at the Vilém Flusser Archive at the Berlin University of Arts (UdK) and transmediale studio at silent green Kulturquartier.
