Teias Criativas: Textile Design Artist Residency and Mentorship (Portugal)

Text of the call on a dark background.

Teias Criativas is an artistic residency programme for Portuguese and international designers, which will take place at New Hand Lab (NHL), Portugal, during 2024 and 2025, through various open calls. The artwork will be inaugurated and exhibited at the NHL as part of the TIDC programme, to be held between March and June 2025 in the city of Covilhã.

The programme explores the industrial textile heritage of NHL as a cultural creative industry, connecting new artists with the permanent makers of this space, to create unique and contemporary works of design.

This first 30-day artistic residency and mentorship has four options for design projects:

  • tufting
  • weaving
  • arts and crafts
  • fashion

The designer will be mentored during the creation of the textile design work, to assist in the use of materials and equipment, the application of techniques, etc. During the residency, the designers will hold a talk with invited guests and an artistic activity (e.g. workshop), which will be publicised and broadcast on streaming. Visits to local projects or organisations in various sectors are also planned with a cultural mediator, connecting the designer-in-residence with the territory. The final work will be inaugurated at TIDC as a temporary exhibition. It will then circulate among the network of partners until it returns to the NHL and becomes part of the collection.

The residency provides the following:

  • Designer’s fee: 2,500 EUR
  • Designer’s grant for expenses: 850 EUR (of which 750 EUR is for food and 50 EUR for transport)
  • Accommodation and studio space
