Rail2Dance: Open Call for Dance Artists (Finland, Sweden, Germany, Slovenia)

The Rail2Dance partners Städtische Theater Chemnitz – Ballet in Germany, Dance Theatre MD in Tampere, Finland, Plesni Teater Ljubljana in Slovenia, and Norrlandsoperan in Sweden invite dance artists who work and live in Tampere (FI), Ljubljana (SI), Chemnitz (DE) and Sweden to participate in two Rail2Dance Residencies, Mobility Phase (Touring) and a Symposium.

The partner organizations will together select in total 5 artists from the collaborating cities / countries to be part of this long-term project due to the following timeline:

  • Residency Ljubljana (SI) - Sep. 2022
    • 5 dance artists from the participating partners will take part in a 10-day kick-off residency hosted in Ljubljana by Plesni Teater Ljubljana, 04.09 – 13.09.2022. Mentored by Anthony Missen, artistic director of Company Chameleon (Manchester/GB), the team will develop and share scores and new skills in audience engagement and performance interaction in public spaces.
  • Local Action Research - Oct./ Nov. 2022 & Mar./Apr. 2023
    • The residency will be followed by a 4-month research-action phase in the artists’ national contexts during which the 5 artists will test their developed skills and scores in close collaboration with the mentor through online meetings. This research period can be combined with other ongoing projects.
  • Touring - Performing & Sharing - May/ June 2023
    • The core phase of the project will be a 40-day tour during which the selected dance artists will embark on a journey across Europe from Finland to Slovenia, on the following journey: Tampere -> Vaasa -> Umeå -> Malmö -> Chemnitz -> Nuremberg- > Maribor and finally to Ljubljana. The journey starts with a short residency. The partner’s cities will be the main hubs of activities but workshops and performances will also be developed on the journey in stopover cities: Vaasa in Finland, Malmö in Sweden, Nuremberg in Germany, and Maribor in Slovenia. This journey will solely be using railway except on the way between Finland and Sweden where a ferry trip will be used. During this mobility phase, the artists will interact with passengers at places for mobility and present participative dance performances in the train stations and in the transport to engage new audiences, and run workshops for local dance professionals to share methodologies as well as with local citizens.
  • Symposium Chemnitz - Sept 2023
    • We invite you to participate in a 2 Days Symposium in Chemnitz (DE) to share knowledge and experience (Autumn 2023).

The project offers a fee for residencies, local action research, touring, participation at the symposium. Travel and accommodation costs as well as per diems.
