Tartu City of Literature: Residency for Writers and Translators Spring 2026 (Estonia)

The call for applications for the Tartu UNESCO City of Literature International Residency (April–May 2026) is now open.

Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest town and UNESCO City of Literature, offers a diverse literary scene. The Tartu City of Literature residency programme aims to foster international literary exchange, support creative work, and introduce international authors and translators to Estonian audiences.

The residency supports one writer or translator for a two-month stay in Tartu, enabling literary work, participation in local events, and engagement with the community.

Writers, poets, and translators of Estonian literature from around the world are welcomed to apply for this international residency in Tartu, Estonia. Applicants must not be current residents of Estonia. Applicants must have at least one published book, screenplay, theatre script, or translation from Estonian.

What is offered:

  • A 2-month stay at the Karl Ristikivi residency apartment
  • A scholarship of 600 EUR per month
  • Travel cost compensation up to 350 EUR
  • Opportunities to engage with Tartu’s cultural scene and perform at literary events
  • Support from a local contact person who helps arrange performances, meetings, tours, and connections within the local literary community
