Established in 1980, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest’s artist in residence programme annually awards artists the opportunity to live and create site-specific work inspired by their total immersion experience in the natural environment. The programme has hosted a multitude of sculptors, photographers, painters, printmakers, installation artists, videographers, and sound artists, as well as contemporary explorations of nature through science, sense and digital mediums. Visual artists of all mediums, with the broadest range of diverse perspectives and experiences, are invited to submit work for consideration.
In exchange for comfortable rustic housing, access to studio space, financial and staff support for the development of new work, artists will create a site-inspired artwork, temporary installation or project as a donation to the Bernheim Foundation. Recipients are also asked to engage the public with their work and/or process while in residence.
Residencies normally last between 5-6 weeks, and can be up to two months, with dates arranged with Bernheim. Selected artists receive a stipend of 2500 USD. Applicants may be emerging or established artists on a regional, national or international level. Individuals or small teams may apply. Students in undergrad studies may not apply.
