AIR InSILo: 2024 Residency on Freedom of Artistic Expression (Austria)

An outline of a house with the words 'open call'.

The current and the previous year have forced everyone to take a fresh look at freedom of artistic expression and recognise that it is threatened not only in countries with authoritarian regimes but also in countries with competitive democratic elections. This open call, titled ‘Non-Utterance’, aims to capture this moment, analyse the atmosphere in the artistic environment, and explore censorship and self-censorship in art.

During the next 2024 round, AIR InSILo, in Hollabrunn, Austria, aims to create a safe space for the completion or reworking of an idea or an artwork that has never been realised due to the political momentum or restraints of self-censorship nature.

They are looking for artistic and curatorial projects and contributions which:

  • suffered political oppression or persecution and were censored;
  • were self-censored because of concern about the life and well-being of the author;
  • critically reflect the topic of censorship and self-censorship;
  • want to try out artistic tools that allow one to express ideas indirectly; or
  • are dedicated to and reflect the conditions of artistic work under oppression.

What is offered:

  • 6-week residence in AIR InSilo (June–July; July–August; August–September);
  • A honorarium of 1,200 EUR;
  • Production costs up to 600 EUR;
  • A coverage of travel costs up to 500 EUR;
  • A coverage of transport costs up to 175 EUR;
  • Mentoring programme with invited Austria-based curators;
  • An opportunity to stay with a partner and/or 1–2 children
