The next edition of MEXE, taking place in Porto from 17-26 September 2021, will mark the festival’s 10 year anniversary. Over the last decade MEXE has established itself as an international platform of reference in the field of community artistic practices.
The theme for the next festival will be ‘The Risk’: ‘In an environment and space that often seems to be referring to a great impasse, the need to live the risk and its multiple facets propels us towards the active realisation of other futures yet to come. Is that risk, virtual and real, where we live, here and now? What are its contours and nuances? Beyond the production of fear, paralysis, blocking and control, what constructive developments can this risk potentiate? In the fields of artistic creation, political action, democratic discussion and community life, confrontation and difference are inherent elements, just like risk.’
With its open call the festival seeks proposals from across art forms and in three categories:
Shows, installations and performance art.
The organisation guarantees the technical and logistical conditions necessary for the presentation of the selected proposals, as well as accommodation (except for artists based in Porto) and food. Each selected project will be entitled to a grant, stipulated from the total amount allocated to this open call (18,000€).
Given the unpredictable context of the pandemic, the next edition of MEXE may consider a mixed presentation model: on-site and virtual. With this in mind, it is important that this aspect be taken into account on the submitted proposals.
