The Gustav Mahler Private University for Music (GMPU) in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Austria, is offering a position as University Professorship for Sound and Intermedia starting 1 October 2024.

The position is part-time contractual employment relationship (20 hours per week equivalent to 50 percent, prospective option to increase hours) for a limited period of five years. Following a positive evaluation, the professorship may be made permanent.

Sound and Intermedia (KIM) is defined as an artistic subject at GMPU. It examines contemporary artistic practices in which sound as an aesthetic and epistemic medium enters into critical relationships with other analogue and digital media, thereby opening up interfaces to technological and social contexts. Building on the core domain of sound art and installation art, other approaches may be integrated, for instance to explore new interstitial spaces in expanded performance and exhibition contexts.

GMPU therefore seeks an experienced and ambitious artistic personality who:

  • Has achieved international recognition and acclaim for their artistic work and research in the fields of sound art, intermedia art or related areas
  • Is capable of open discourse and is familiar with current positions in contemporary art (sound art, media art) and music
  • Has an interest in central university topics such as interdisciplinarity and collaborative processes and is committed to inclusion and diversity
  • Has broad knowledge of relevant topics in the discipline, particularly in the field of digital technologies (e.g. human-machine interaction, domain-specific programming languages, software and hardware)
  • Wants to bring to fruition, through teaching and research, the field of Sound and Intermedia as outlined above
  • Is capable of supervising doctoral students specialising in Sound and Intermedia in their respective projects
  • Has didactic skills and enthusiasm for working with students and, preferably, university teaching experience
  • Can contribute national and international contacts in the arts, culture and research sector to support students and graduates and to build national and international networks
  • Has very good written and spoken English and German language skills (in case of insufficient German language skills, willingness to acquire these skills within a transition period).

According to wkP4 of the GMPU regulations, the gross monthly salary (full-time employment, 14 times a year) is 6,218.30 EUR. A higher salary can be earned depending on professional experience.
