Mustarinda: Residency for Artists Working or Residing in Nordic-Baltic Countries (Finland)

Close-up of the branches of a bush, very fine, brittle and white.

Mustarinda and artist-curator collective Porin kulttuurisäätö invites artists working and/or residing in the Nordic-Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland) to apply for a funded thematic project residency. Residency period is two months in May-June 2024.

During the residency the artists are invited to produce durational and site-specific works for the Mustarinda 2024 summer exhibition, opening in June. The process-based exhibition will be built around themes such as the potential in the intersections of art, nature and tourism, embodied experimental and experiential approaches and durational practices – what is controllable and what cannot be controlled. These themes will be explored together and collectively with the artists and curators.

The exhibition will take place in the nearby areas of Mustarinda house and Paljakka hill, and it connects to a longer-term Art National Park initiative by Mustarinda. Art National Park will be a nationally and globally significant attraction and brand answering the rising megatrends in tourism. In addition to nature protection and highlighting the environmental values of the region, e.g. its unique ecosystems and geology, it will also serve as a platform for promoting local culture, and cultural heritage as well as high quality art. The multidisciplinary art programme embedded in the idea of National Park is a significant factor for the cultural change in ecological reconstruction, not to forget its importance in making contemporary art more accessible by bringing it to sparsely populated countryside.

Artists who are interested in the themes, framework and questions related above are encouraged to apply. Altogether 3-4 artists/artist duos will be invited based on the applications. The two-month residency is supported by Nordic Culture Point and each artist/duo gets:

  • A fee of 1200€ per month.
  • 400€ for travel.
  • Free accommodation + studio at the Mustarinda house.
  • Small production budget.
