AVISTAVULCÃO is opening a call for applications for a one-month artist-in-residence programme focused on research and creation, to take place in March 2027, intended for an artist or artistic duo.
Located on the island of Faial, near the Capelinhos Volcano (Azores, Portugal), the residency offers an immersion in a territory shaped by the power of geology, its insular nature, and the constant interplay between nature and human presence. More than just a workplace, the Azores here become living material for creation.
AVISTAVULCÃO invites artists to develop projects that engage with the landscape, memory, local history, and the contemporary challenges facing peripheral regions. Themes such as geological time, transformation, resilience, isolation, mobility, and the relationships between communities and the environment may serve as starting points for processes of research and creation.
AVISTAVULCÃO values context-sensitive proposals that prioritise observation, listening, and a relationship with the place. Throughout the residency, artists will have the opportunity to meet local stakeholders and engage in moments of sharing with the community, culminating in a public presentation of the process or the results of the work carried out.
This residency reflects AVISTAVULCÃO’s vision as a space dedicated to contemporary artistic practices that prioritize time, experimentation, and dialogue between creation, territory, and local knowledge.
The residency is for artists from countries eligible for the Creative Europe programme to imagine, research, and create from this unique territory in the middle of the Atlantic.
