In light of the ongoing student protests worldwide and the arrest warrants issued by the ICC, On the Move condemns the continuing devastation in Gaza and the failure of global civil society and international powers to halt the carnage, and we believe it remains essential for those in the cultural sector to continue to voice their solidarity with artists, cultural actors, and all people impacted.
The toll of violence on civilians, including the destruction of essential infrastructure like hospitals, schools, and cultural centres, is appalling. Since October 2023, the conflict has resulted in an ongoing holding of civilian hostages, the slaughter of over 36,000 people—more than half of whom are children and women—and the displacement of 1.7 million civilians*.
The separation of art and politics is impossible, and this becomes clear in times of conflict when artistic expression holds a unique power. Underlying histories of subjugation, prejudice, inequality, and violence must be acknowledged and addressed for there to be any hope of lasting peace and equitable resolution. Art can facilitate this understanding and reconciliation, while being a critical platform for amplifying marginalised voices, highlighting current and historical injustices, and defending universal human rights. For these reasons, On the Move stands firmly in solidarity with the artists, cultural actors, and civilians whose lives and cultural heritage are at risk. We salute their courage in speaking out amidst peril and threats to their safety and well-being, and commit to facilitating and amplifying their voices.
As an organisation dedicated to promoting culture and striving for a fairer cultural sector, On the Move joins its colleagues in the occupied territories of Palestine and the wider arts community in calling on leaders to acknowledge the gravity of the situation in Gaza and the widespread complicity of many states in creating and perpetuating this human catastrophe. We call on our governments to use all legal means to identify, address, and prevent further war crimes, including genocide, and advocate for a resolution that is rooted in justice and self-determination.
