Hangar / Kunsthaus Bregenz: Exchange Residency for Artists in Spain (Austria)

Over the waters of a bay the boxy modernist form of the Kunsthaus Bregenz is visible, nestled in a forested hillside.

This call is for the third edition of the exchange grants between Hangar and the Land Vorarlberg / KUB Bregenz, for the realisation of a residency programme between the cities of Bregenz and Barcelona. Within this programme, two artists residing in the Spanish State will be selected to carry out a residency at Kunsthaus Bregenz.

Bregenz is a city internationally recognised for its cultural attractions. Artists in residence will have the opportunity to work in this environment and will have support to carry out their artistic projects in collaboration with local institutions and artistic production workshops: the Kunsthaus Bregenz, the gallery of the town hall (Magazin 4), the Vorarlberg artist society or different artistic production workshops such as Druckwerk, specialised in engraving.

Kunsthaus Bregenz is an internationally active institute for the exhibition of contemporary art. Thanks to its exhibition programme and its architecture, the Kunsthaus is also internationally recognised. It was designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor on behalf of the Austrian Federal State of Vorarlberg and was built between 1990 and 1997. Peter Zumthor won the Mies van der Rohe Prize for European Architecture in 1998 for the Kunsthaus. In 2009, he received the Pritzker Prize for architecture. Artists are invited to respond to the architecture of the building or enter into dialogue with it. For this reason, a large part of the work on display has been created as site-specific work for the institution. The scholarship artists will be able to investigate the spaces of the building and use all the facilities of the Kunsthaus Bregenz.

This call is open to artists of all ages, residing in the Spanish State, who develop proposals in the field of visual arts, performance, installations, sound art, audiovisual, new media, etc.

The residency will last two months, from 1 May – 31 June 2022, and provide:

  • €1500 for living expenses (€750 / month), €500 for artist fees, €750 for production and € 250 to cover travel expenses (gross amounts).
  • Accommodation and work space in the city of Bregenz.
  • Access to Kunsthaus Bregenz, the town hall gallery (Magazin 4), the artists’ society in Vorarlberg or different art production workshops, depending on availability.
