Fremantle Biennale 2025 Call for National and Asia-Pacific Choreographers (Australia)

Title of the call on a dark image of the sea.

Fremantle Biennale, Performing Lines WA and STRUT Dance will offer an experimental choreographic platform over three weeks within the context of the Fremantle Biennale. The programme will be held from 4 to 23 November 2025.

Midfield offers participation for four mid-career choreographers from Boorloo/Perth and three from regional WA/national, and/or international (Asia-Pacific).

The participants will be accompanied across the three weeks by renowned multi-genre artists who will offer provocation and guidance. Participating artists will be invited to consider and develop new thinkings, new works, actions and live scores in response to each other, guest facilitators, place and the 2025 Fremantle Biennale.

Artists will meet across five days of each week for a series of talks and workshops with guest facilitators, alongside self-determined collective work. Participating artists will be invited to consider and develop new thinking, movement and/or choreographic work in response to expanded notions of site-responsive practice, care, collaboration and sanctuary. The workshops will provide a forum for provocation of the theme, for artistic exchange, research and/or site-based investigations.

Artists will be invited to create and present public-facing outcomes, which could take the form of workshops, public programmes, performances or live actions.

Successful artists will receive:

  • Weekly fee of 1,500 AUD across three weeks (4,500 AUD total)
  • For those travelling to Boorloo/Perth – travel, accommodation and per diems will be provided
  • Support in order to deliver the outcomes, including access to a budget for materials, production and technical equipment as required
