Goethe-Institut Project Space Grant 2026 (South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini)

The Goethe-Institut Project Space (GPS) programme grants seed funding to three artistic projects that are realised in rural and peri-urban parts of South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini between February and November 2026.

The GPS programme is supporting artistic projects that are engaging with communities outside the big urban centres and are focusing on the production and/or facilitation of artistic content. It also welcomes projects that deliberately foster collaboration and exchange between rural and urban spaces, and projects that seek to build partnerships with a specific community or arts space.

The programme is explicitly not looking for social cohesion or social development projects. Projects that solely take place in urban centres (e.g. Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban) will also not be considered.

Projects can range from workshops to exhibitions, events to performances; concerts to discussion formats and so forth; including visual art, literature, film, music, dance and theatre, as well as interdisciplinary projects.

The applicant/s can be an individual, an organisation or a collective.

Anyone can apply as long as the project itself takes place in South Africa, Lesotho or Eswatini with local collaborators/project partners involved actively in the project. Any occurring (international) travel costs must be planned and budgeted for in the project budget. The budget amount is up to 105,000 ZAR per project.
