From 2020 to 2023, the scientific and artistic collaboration Driving the Human is developing and producing seven tangible prototypes responding to complex contemporary scenarios. The project is jointly led by four partner institutions – acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering, Forecast, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design and ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe – and relies on the expert knowledge and skills of their combined networks. Together, these partners will work to enrich the various developments and outcomes of the initiative.
Driving the Human now invites designers, artists, scientists, initiatives, and agents from any other field of expertise, from anywhere in the world, to submit proposals for projects that critically engage with the present and propose alternatives to current developments and disruptions, reflecting on what makes us human, and re-examining our relationship with society, the planet, and life itself.
Selected applicants will be invited to interact with the expertise and multidisciplinary know-how of the Driving the Human partner institutions in order to develop future-proof concepts and bring them to fruition as prototypes.
Following an initial selection by the jury, 21 proposals will be presented at the Driving the Human event in 15-17 October 2021 in Berlin. Following this event, the jury and a board of experts will select seven finalists. These seven proposals will be developed further and first presented in-depth at a public presentation in Munich, 10-11 December 2021; and finally as prototypes at the concluding Driving the Human event in Berlin, in December 2022.
For your participation at the Driving the Human event in Berlin in October 2021, you will receive an artist fee of 2000 euros and a production budget of up to 2000 euros. Travel and accommodation for one person will be covered by the organisers.
If your proposal is subsequently chosen as one of the seven projects to be shown at the Munich presentation in December 2021 and developed as prototype and showcased at the Driving the Human event in December 2022 in Berlin, you will receive an artist fee of 15,000 euros and an appropriate production budget according to the practice and project needs.
