ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen/Institute for International Cultural Relations) invites proposals for the following research project: ‘International Cultural Relations to Fulfil the SDGs: Indicators to Measure the Achievement of Targets and Objectives’, to start from November 2024 for approximately six months.

This research project aims to examine the extent to which various countries (and at which administrative levels) have already developed indicators to measure the impact of international cultural relations measures in achieving the SDGs; what debates and discussions are taking place in the political arena, cultural institutions, and civil society on measuring the impact of culture and art; and what specific challenges are being faced.

The following questions are central to the research project: How can indicators be developed for the area of international cultural relations to measure its contribution to the SDGs? What examples of good practice already exist internationally? Do indicators serve as a monitoring/controlling element, or are they already being used for evaluation (e.g. through implementation reports or other measures)? What methods (especially for qualitative indicators) are used in this process? What experiences have been made with these methods? How can the ambivalence of this instrument for the art and culture sector be specifically described analytically? How can this challenge be met? What recommendations for political practice can be derived from this? What needs to follow in the next step, also for the practical field of international cultural relations, in order to achieve the SDGs more effectively?

The experts involved in the project provide actors in the area of international cultural relations with clear, concise summaries of the latest academic findings. They formulate recommendations for future foreign policy strategies, initiate expert dialogue, and organise discussion forums and events.

The fee for this project is 9,000 EUR (gross).
