Australian Tapestry Workshop: Hancock Fellowship International Artists Residency 2027 (Australia)

The Australian Tapestry Workshop’s residency programme, in Melbourne, Australia, offers mid-career artists the chance to extend their practice through engagement with their resources.

For over 20 years, artists in residence have immersed themselves in the studio, exchanging knowledge and skills with tapestry weavers and dye technicians. Artists are invited to further engage with local communities during their residency through exhibition and public programming.

The Hancock Fellowship – International Artists Residency, from 16 August to 11 September 2027, is open only to mid-career textile artists and designers living and working outside Australia. To be eligible, applicants must not be living or working in Australia, including as a temporary resident. The Hancock Fellowship is generously supported by the Tapestry Foundation of Australia It includes:

  • Return flights to Melbourne
  • Four weeks accommodation
  • A solo exhibition in ATW ‘s main gallery, including an artist exhibition fee of 1,000 AUD, supported freight and installation costs
  • A dedicated working space in the weaving studio
  • Up to 100 AUD worth of ATW yarn and postproduction tapestry materials
  • Up to 10 hours of specialist studio support which can be used over several days.
  • Use of a range of textile construction equipment
  • Access to ATW’s online tapestry weaving course
  • Opportunity to show and sell artwork in one of two street front galleries
