The 4th Matsu Biennial, to be held on Matsu Islands, Lianjiang County, Taiwan, from 20 August – 7 November 2027, is launching its international open call for artists.
This open call encourages global creators to address Matsu’s cultural preservation and perpetuation by translating the Cold War legacy on this island from external perspectives. They are looking for creative proposals that respond to the environment, spark contemporary reflection, and engage the public, turning this frontline island into a contemporary art site for global dialogue.
No single theme is set; artists are free to explore three axes:
- The Island: Eastern Min culture, religious practices, traditional stone houses, and the returning generation.
- The Outpost: Site translation, geopolitics, blackout regulations, and collective memory.
- The Ocean: Environmental care, sustainable ecology, ‘blue tears’ (sea sparkles), and marine debris.
Project Types are site-specific installations (indoor or outdoor), or participatory creative projects (interdisciplinary actions, immersive experiences, or community interactions).
Each selected proposal will receive a grant of up to 800,000 NTD (tax included).
