  • News / Tara Ocean Foundation: At Sea Artist Residencies During the Microbiome Mission

    The Tara Ocean Foundation is the first recognised public interest foundation in France dedicated to the world’s oceans. Its research schooner Tara has already travelled more than 400,000 kilometers, making stopovers in more than 60 countries during 4 major expeditions. The Foundation is calling for applications for six artist residencies to take place aboard the ship. Artists will embark aboard Tara for periods of 2 weeks to 1 month: between Pointe à Pitre and Cayenne; along the coasts of Brazil and Argentina; on the Atlantic crossing between Argentina and Cape Town; then heading north along the African coast.

  • News / ART4MED: Open Call for Art Science Projects in the Field of (Open) Medicine (Slovenia)

    ART4MED is an international project investigating how art and design can meet open science to improve access to healthcare. The current call is addressed to projects in the field of (self-)experimentation and collaborative projects between artists, scientists and other professionals from the field of (open) medicine. The residency programme has a research phase (January–June 2021), followed by a production phase (July–December 2021), including a physical residency in Ljubljana, Slovenia with a duration ranging from 15 days to 2 months.

    The Ocean Fellowship Programme will support six fellows and two mentors to conduct individual and collaborative transdisciplinary research which connects situated projects, collective pedagogies, and voices along the Mediterranean shores across fields of art, culture, science, conservation, and activism. Fellows should be current students or recent graduates, while mentors should be scholars with a graduate or postgraduate degree with some relevant experience in teaching or mentoring. The programme runs 8 March – 17 October 2021.

    The Creative Europe project MAREBOX has issued a call for artists and interdisciplinary teams for ‘Water Weighs: Tracing underwater memory, the sea’s life and its corporality’. The call is open for teams or individuals whose work and research is concerned with the possibility of exploring the memory of the sea and the flux of its layered and complex underwater life, or in 'engaging with listening to echoes from the sea'. Selected applicants will participate in a residency in Calabria, Italy around the end of May 2021.

  • News / LEAD project > Call for Artists to Create a Commission on Health Knowledge in Africa

    Artists in and from Africa and its diasporas are invited to apply for a visual commission to address questions of health, knowledge and the body. The commission can be carried out remotely, from January to March 2021 and carries a stipend and production budget for three artists. Successful applicants will be invited to realise visual works in conversation with recent research on how public health knowledge is understood and utilised in Uganda, Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania. This research is led by the Localised Evidence and Decision-Making (LEAD) project, based at London School of Economics’ Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa, in partnership with London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and SOAS, University of London.

    The British Council is inviting applications for creative commissions that bring together art, science and digital technology and offer innovative responses to climate change. The commissions will be part of the cultural programme in the build up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), which the UK is hosting in Glasgow in November 2021.     Artists of any nationality or creative discipline are invited to submit a project proposal involving research and production phases during a two-month residency at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva. The artist will also have the opportunity to expand their research and test its applications during a one-month residency in Barcelona. Individuals and collectives may apply for the residency, which will take place in 2021.
