Tilling Roots and Seeds XXI: Residencies and Production Grant (Spain, Italy, Austria)

A simulated image of farm plants and people walking in white suits and several globes with machinery inside.

The project Tilling Roots and Seeds is calling for applications from artists and collectives for four artistic grants, including one grant dedicated to the creation of a ground-breaking artwork, and three grants for 6-week research-based artist residencies in Bologna, Italy or Barcelona, Spain.

The project seeks to illuminate the critical connection between planetary health and the evolution of food systems, particularly in the context of the climate and biodiversity crisis. They welcome applications from artists and collectives centred around the exploration of land stewardship and the crafting of innovative speculative narratives, critical tools and experimental practices that challenge the status quo of current unsustainable food production.

Residencies:

  • Barcelona: divided into two periods of three-weeks stay each, between November 2024 and May 2025
  • Bologna: divided into three different stays, between July 2024 and May 2025
  • To finish the work by August 2025
  • Target international artists residing in Europe

  • Each selected artist will conduct a capacity-building workshop in the country of the mentor organisation during their residency period.
  • All projects must be developed in direct collaboration with farmers and residency hosts in both rural and urban contexts.
  • Public Presentations will be made on each residency location and at Ars Electronica Festival 2025.

For the residencies, accommodation in each country, along with travel and subsistence expenses, will be covered up to a maximum of 1,600 EUR for each residency. Each selected artist or collective will receive a total grant of 6,000 EUR gross for artist fees and a research grant.
