German Federal Ministry of Education and Research: Call for African Artists to Design the German-African Incentive Award (Germany)

A photographic collage of many men and women with the text 'call for African artists'.

Young artists from countries on the African continent are invited to apply to create 10 award trophies for the German-African Incentive Award (GAIIA) ceremony, hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, to be held later in 2024.

The selected artist will design and produce a set of 10 awards that represent the German-African economic, scientific, and cultural cooperation and entrepreneurial spirit. In line with the German-African Innovation Incentive Award, sustainability stands at the heart of this project and they encourage the use of all kinds of environment-friendly and sustainable materials. The organisers are also very interested in the story that lies behind the award trophies as well as in the inspiration and context of the artist’s work, the meaning it expresses, and how it is consistent with the specifications of the project.

The idea of GAIIA is to improve and strengthen innovation-oriented research in Africa as well as to use the research results for life-changing solutions. Once the winner is determined, they will be visited and further interviewed about themselves and the creative process that went into the making of the award trophies. The resulting video will be shown at the German-African Innovation Incentive Award in 2024.

Applications may be sent by anyone, regardless of age, experience, or education, as long as they are residents in an African country. The organisers encourage young artists in particular to apply.

The selected artists and their team (should they be working as a team), will receive a reward of 5,000 EUR and material costs will be covered. Transport costs for the finished trophies and travel costs for the artist(s) (should they choose to attend the award ceremony in Berlin) will be provided.
