CISR Berlin: International Lab, ‘Urban Citizenship in Transition’ (Germany)

Urban Citizenship in Transition

Germany, Moldova, and Georgia are facing somewhat similar challenges in migration processes. In the past years the urban canvas and urban contexts, in which ‘new’ citizens are struggling to find their place, have been rapidly transforming.

The international lab ‘Urban Citizenship in Transition’ (15-21 September 2023) wants to address these challenges and practically explore the right to the city and the potential for empowerment through urban citizenship. The Lab will bring together 18 young professionals from civic organisations and initiatives across Germany, Moldova and Georgia who are actively engaged in working with individuals with migrant or refugee backgrounds.

The Lab will focus on the following questions:

  • How can we approach inequalities in cities and create diverse spaces?
  • How can we support newcomers in navigating their city’s public environment and fostering interactions with others?
  • What sociocultural and creative urban practices can empower newcomers to become active community members and citizens?

The Lab takes place in Berlin is open to young professionals, activists, culture makers and artists (aged 20-30 years old) from Moldova, Georgia and Germany who work with people with migrant or refugee backgrounds.

The main transportation costs, accommodation and meals are taken care of by the organisers. Participants will share accommodations, with two people per room. The Lab also offers mentorship and funding through mini-grants to help participants put ideas into action.
