Casa d’Artistes: Residency for Contemporary Photography/Video Artists (Menorca)

Half a dozen people walk in single file through a field of tall yellow grass.

‘Illa’ means ‘island’ in Catalan. The project (illa) is an artist residency for contemporary photography and/or video, which will take place at the Casa d’Artistes creation centre over 60 days from 2 April – 31 May 2024.

The centre is a space for artistic and cultural research and creation located in a rural environment outside the village of Es Mercadal (Menorca, Spain). It is a country house where various artists and cultural professionals live and work together for a set period of time. It is in use almost all year round and is managed by Es FAR Cultural, a non-profit organisation based in Menorca.

(illa) is aimed at visual artists from the western Mediterranean islands that are not part of Spain (Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, the Tuscan archipelago, Phlegraean Islands, etc.). Its aim is to create works centred around the concept of insularity and the relationship between vulnerability and resilience, using their own experiences as either island natives or residents, as well as those obtained from Menorca, the host territory of the (illa) project.

The expected results of the residency are:

  • To produce new artworks offering new insights on the proposed themes.
  • To generate collective thought among the residents of the island and offer insights into the creative process, through events that are open to the public
  • To create a joint exhibition at the end of the residence.

The project is funded by the Creative Europe programme. For selected artists it will provide accommodation and workspaces, and a mobility grant:

  • Travel allowance: a fixed amount of either €350 or €700 per participant, depending on distance, that covers both outward and return journeys.
  • Daily allowance: a fixed amount of €25 per day per participant, to contribute towards everyday expenses (food, transport etc) during their stay. In total, each artist will receive €1500.
  • Top-ups: additional financial support to be paid to each artist based on their individual situation and needs.
    • Green top-up: fixed amount of €350 per participant who travels more than 600 km one-way, and who uses any mode of transport other than a plane to make their outward or return journey.
    • Visa expenses: fixed amount of €80 for expenses connected to visa applications.
    • Family top-up: fixed amount of €100 for participants who have at least one child below the age of 10, regardless of the number of children and of the child/children joining the residence project.
    • Disability support: up to €75 per day for participants whose disability affects their ability to carry out their mobile project. Exceptional cases to be discussed with the Casa d’Artistes team.
