BABEL - The Art of Listening in Theatre for Young Audiences

BABEL – or The Art of Listening in Theatre for young audiences (TYA) is seeking young emerging arts practitioners (under 36 years old) for participation in training workshops within the theme ‘The Art of Listening, the sensitive relationship between performer and child/adolescent spectator’ during several BABEL festivals in different countries in Europe over the period of 2023-2024.

The workshops are composed of four steps following the Babel Training Dramaturgy: ‘Opening up, Getting close and Communicating, Actions and reactions, and Balance’ and pursues ‘The art of listening to the audience’ and ‘The art of Listening to the other performers – fellow on-stage’. The workshops are led by two highly experienced directors in TYA, Brigitte Dethier and Alex Byrne, and entail performative encounters with child/adolescent audiences.

Each workshop lasts 5 days. BABEL will provide participation in the workshops along with travel expenses, living costs and accommodation for 6 days and nights (arrival is scheduled for the day before the workshop begins and departure for the day after it ends).

The workshops are divided into ‘rounds’ (1st and 2nd) and each round is composed of two ‘paths’. Each path is led by one of the above-mentioned directors.

Each applicant will participate in a path composed of two workshops of their choice. The applicants will furthermore have the opportunity to participate in the other festival activities taking place around the workshops in coordination with the organising partner.

1st round – 2023:

  • Kitoks Festival, from 16-20 January 2023, in Vilnius (Lithuania), with Alex Byrne.
  • International Theaterfest, from 24-28 October 2023, in St. Vith (Belgium), with Alex Byrne.
  • Brik Festival, from 22-26 June 2023, in Breda (Netherlands), with Brigitte Dethier.
  • elPetit Festival, from 16-19 November 2023, in Sabadell (Spain), with Brigitte Dethier.

2nd round – 2024 (not all dates are final at this stage):

  • Festival Visioni di Futuro, second half of March, in Bologna (Italy) with Brigitte Dethier.
  • Aprilfestival, from 16th to 20th of April in Denmark, with Alex Byrne.
  • Brik Festival, June, In Breda (Netherlands) with Brigitte Dethier.
  • Lutke Festival, Last week of September in Ljubljana (Slovenia) with Alex Bryne.

The proposal is open to Next Generation practitioners, who are performing arts performers from all countries; performers of all genres and techniques. The Next Generation (NG) residency programme is an ASSITEJ initiative, designed to support artistic and cultural exchange and collaboration between international artists aged 36 years or below, interested in theatre for young audiences.
