Open Call for Live Coding Projects for ‘On-the-fly’ (Germany, Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain)

‘on-the-fly’ is a Creative Europe project, led by Hangar in partnership with ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Ljudmila and Creative Coding Utrecht, committed to supporting the development of European live coding practices.

Live coding is a performing art and a creative technique, centered on writing and modifying algorithms in real-time, often in the presence of a physical or virtual audience, in such a way that the person writing the algorithms becomes part of the algorithm itself. That is, live coding explores real-time writing of algorithms with creative intentions. The process is shown to the public, thus giving insights into the performer's mind. Strongly tied to mathematics and computer science, live coding is a powerful tool for promoting artistic research, digital creation and technology literacy.

This open call will award 8 grants, with accompanying residencies, to develop artistic productions involving live coding practices. Each residency will last from 15 days to 1 month, with the exact schedule depending on the needs of the project as well as the place where they are carried out. They will be hosted by one of the partner institutions: Hangar, ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Creative Coding Utrecht, Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory.

The project covers:

  • Artist fee (varies depending on residency location and length, but around 1500 EUR for 1 month).

  • Subsistence costs.

  • Roundtrip travel costs (300-350 EUR maximum, depending on residency location).

  • Production costs.

  • Access to facilities and equipment, peer to peer mentoring.

Researchers, artists, developers and members of collectives of all ages (over 18 years old) and nationalities working in the field of live coding can apply.

Deadline: 14 January 2021
