LACMA > 2021 Art + Technology Lab Call for Artist Proposals (USA)
LACMA – Los Angeles Country Museum of Art’s Art + Technology Lab is accepting proposals for artist projects, with awards of up to $50,000 as well as in-kind support from the museum and private partners in technology and science.
Grant recipients are encouraged to pursue new directions in their work that explore ideas in technology and culture. Preference is given to projects that are speculative in nature and provide opportunities for public engagement, through outputs such as performances, demonstrations, workshops, and research lectures.
The Art + Technology Lab is designed to foster new work with financial and in-kind support for projects that engage technology. In addition to the grant, artists receive advice and assistance from the museum and from their technology advisors including innovation leaders from Hyundai, Snap Inc., YouTube Learning, SpaceX, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the MIT Media Lab’s Space Exploration Initiative.
Recent endeavours have involved A.I., genetic engineering, and satellite technology. Applicants are encouraged to learn about past artist projects that have been funded by the Lab as they may serve as useful references.
Art + Technology Lab grants are open to individuals and collectives located anywhere in the world.
While there is a preference for projects that explore emerging technology, prior technological experience or knowledge is not required. Artists who have not used advanced technology in their practice are encouraged to consider how technology applications might build upon and expand the trajectory of their work. Recipients need not be located in or near Los Angeles. The Lab welcomes proposals for projects that are presented outside of the bounds of the museum campus, including conceptual projects and projects that unfold in virtual, online, extraterrestrial locations.
Preference, however, is given to project proposals that include some aspect of public demonstration and engagement with the museum’s audience. Project budgets may include travel for this purpose. LACMA also welcomes proposals that utilise museum resources, including access to data, material from their archives, information about their collection, and the use of museum digital properties as a platform for presenting projects, though that is not a requirement.
Deadline: 25 February 2021
