impuls International Composition Competition (Austria)

Based in Graz, Austria, impuls is the International Ensemble and Composers Academy for Contemporary Music and Association for the Communication of Contemporary Music. It promotes and supports young composers not only within its Academy, but also through the impuls Composition Competition.

Through this biennial competition, impuls commissions new works for ensemble by young composers. These composers are then invited to take part in the impuls Composition Workshop in Vienna and Graz – where their new works are collectively rehearsed and discussed extensively with musicians of world-class ensembles such as Klangforum Wien – as well as to the premiere of their new pieces within the impuls Academy and Festival in Graz. impuls also intends to support the composers’ works beyond that point through recordings, broadcasting and additional concerts.

The competition is open internationally, but applicants must not have been born before 1986. Following selection in 2020, composers will be expected to deliver their composition in 2022, with the premiere taking place at impuls Festival 2023.

impuls will provide:

  • Travel expenses (within Europe: economy flight or second-class rail ticket, whichever is the cheaper; from overseas: a contribution up to a maximum of €600).

  • Living expenses: hotel (if needed) plus per diem of €26 (throughout the duration of the workshop and day of first performance and accompanying activities).

  • At the latest upon delivery of the score and the complete musical material – by the deadlines given – the composers will receive a one-time payment of €2700 to compensate for usage rights.

Deadline: 15 October 2020
