MGLC Švicarija / Igor Zabel Association for Culture and Theory > Critic in Residence Programme 2020 (Slovenia)

MGLC Švicarija and the Igor Zabel Association for Culture and Theory’s have opened applications for their international residency programme. The residency is focused on exploring and reflecting upon contemporary visual art, but the organisers are also interested in crossing art disciplines and human sciences. They therefore regularly welcome art writers seeking to learn about and reflect upon Ljubljana’s local art scene.

Running 1-30 October 2020, the residency aims to host an art critic or cultural journalist who is active in writing and publishing reviews and/or other forms of art writing in the international context; who is interested in Ljubljana’s vibrant art scene; and who will produce at least two pieces of writing (reviews, interviews, columns, etc.) on selected artist(s), art exhibition(s), or art event(s) in Ljubljana over the course of the residency. The articles shall be published in the English language in a relevant periodical (printed or online), on the radio, television or a personal blog. The selection will also be based on the candidate who can provide the best possible outreach for the articles produced during the one-month ‘critic in residency’ period in Ljubljana.

The organisers are looking for:

  • An emerging or established art critic or cultural journalist with an ongoing writing practice regardless of his or her nationality, age or gender.

  • An art critic or cultural journalist with excellent English proficiency (though he or she does not have to be a native speaker).

  • An art critic or cultural journalist who is able to produce at least two pieces of writing over the one-month period (the pieces can be published later).

  • An art critic or cultural journalist who will publish (at least) two articles about the selected artist(s), art exhibition(s) or art event(s) in Ljubljana in a magazine or journal, newspaper, online portal, radio, television, or personal blog.

  • An art critic or cultural journalist who has a desire to explore new art scenes.

  • A skilled writer who has proven experience in writing and publishing articles on contemporary art.

They offer:

  • Free accommodation in a fully-equipped studio apartment.

  • Reimbursement of travel costs to/from Ljubljana (up to €900 worldwide, or up to €500 for European countries).

  • Bursary towards living costs (approx. €1085 per month gross / €35 per day gross).

  • Support in learning about the local art scene.

Deadline: 17 February 2020
