CreArt > Mural Commission for Rouen Impressionnée (France)

For the 2020 edition of its ‘Dual Exhibition’, the City of Rouen has planned a project in collaboration with the urban art festival Rouen Impressionnée. A call has been put out for a street artist from the CreArt network (born or resident in Valladolid – Spain; Genoa and Lecce – Italy; Clermont – Ferrand / France; Zagreb – Croatia; Kaunas –Lituania; Lublin and Katowice – Poland; Aveiro – Portugal; Skopje – North Macedonia) to come and work alongside a street artist from Rouen to produce a mural. Work will take place 1-15 June 2020, and the wall will then be part of the 4th edition of Rouen Impressionnée.

As a festival, Rouen Impressionnée works to honour the urban landscapes of Rouen, from brownfields to social housing to heritage sites. For this edition of its regular Dual Exhibition, a wall in the semi-abandoned suburban area of Les Contremoulins has been chosen to host the collaboration. This neighbourhood has a history of hopes and misfortunes: it was first a slum in the post-war period. Around 1955, Abbé Pierre built emergency shelters there, which were destroyed five years later. In 1978, pavilions were erected in the same place but the soil on which they were built was loose sand, compromising their durability, with a demolition now planned for 2022-23.

One of these pavilions will be the site of the mural. The construction has two perpendicular walls, one of which will be dedicated to the CreArt artist, and the other to the local artist. They will be invited to work in this unusual format – with an entire building to cover – and to take inspiration from the surrounding environment, engaging with elements such as the specific architecture of the building, notions of domestic life, or even the social reality of the neighbourhood. The size of the walls is approximately 3 to 5 metres high and 4 metres wide. A picture can be seen here.

The selected artist will receive:

  • Travel costs covered.

  • Accommodation and subsistence costs covered.

  • 1500€ as a presentation fee.

Deadline: 27 January 2020
