Siao-Long Cultural Park > Artists-in-Residence Programme (Taiwan)

中文

Siao-Long Cultural Park is located in the Jiali district, on the northern outskirts of Tainan city. Jiali is a tranquil and leisurely small town with a laid-back lifestyle, located approximately 45 minutes’ drive from downtown Tainan. The park has evolved from the former Jiali Sugar Factory, where its revitalised Japanese era sugar refinery warehouses have successfully merged historic architecture with modern design in an area which is itself rich in history, culture and agriculture. As a cultural stronghold for traditional performance and folk arts, the park has transformed itself into a modern art venue which promotes artistic growth.

International artists participating in SCP’s residency programme stay in a vibrant community of artists and have the opportunity to exchange techniques and ideas with other artists; local and international, emerging and established. Artists live in close proximity to local craftsmen and artisans and are encouraged to take the community and the vibrant local culture as inspiration for their artworks. SCP has professional, wheelchair-accessible, air-conditioned, modern studio spaces, galleries and theatres for exhibitions, workshops and performances.

SCP takes the concept of ‘Site-Specific Art’ as its theme for the AIR program in 2021. The artworks should respond to the park’s environment, including the warehouses, corridors, the railway landscape, the children’s museum, and either the indoor or the outdoor spaces. They should also engage with the locality’s natural and historical sites, and with local communities. Projects based on outdoor spaces will be considered as a priority.

Residencies last 45-90 days and take place in the period 1 July 2021 - 30 November 2021. Applications are welcomed from artists working in interdisciplinary modes, or in visual arts, performance or photography.

SCP provides:

  • Placements of up to three months with free accommodation and studio space.

  • Living and working expenses in Taiwan (including 18% personal income-tax and insurance) - partly subsidized (NT$ 30,000 per month maximum, or ~900 EUR).

  • Presentation expenses: the maximum allocation is NT$ 100,000 (including tax; ~3000 EUR), which will be paid directly to the relevant contractors. The above expenses include: providing a service or materials used in completing workshops, exhibitions and performances; fees for brochure design and printing, dissemination, art work insurance, translation fees, and expenses for a press conference, etc. Any transportation fees for works are excluded.
