Santa Maria da Feira: Creative City of Gastronomy temperART 2024 (Portugal)

A floating kitchen bench with flames out the top, a man behind adds something to the flames.

In 2024, temperART will be opening two international calls inviting artists, chefs, technological entrepreneurs and artistic companies to submit proposals that explore the intersection between gastronomy, performing arts and media arts. The calls, which are aimed at cultural and creative and gastronomic agents, aims to support a project that adds value to the cultural and gastronomic heritage of Santa Maria da Feira.

temperART is a project from the Santa Maria da Feira | Creative City of Gastronomy | UNESCO programme and which aims to promote dialogue and the intersection of gastronomy with the performing arts, digital arts, media arts, robotics and technologies.

There are two strands in this edition: media arts and contemporary circus.

  • For the media arts strand, temperART will select a project to be created in an artistic residency and presented at the FOOD 4 Thought International Conference, 2–4 April 2025.
  • For the circus strand, temperART will select a project to be created in an artistic residency and presented at Imaginarius – International Street Theatre Festival, 22–25 May 2025, under the theme Progress.

The presentations for both streams must take place in public space, with value being given to site-specific artistic creation for the Historic City Centre of Santa Maria da Feira, unconventional spaces or cultural equipment within the festival perimeter. The selected projects must be partially developed in the context of an artistic residency, at least one period with an average duration of one to three weeks (between August 2024 and March 2025).

In both strands, financial support worth a maximum of 16,000 EUR will be awarded, distributed as follows: 5,000 EUR for the selected project, including food costs; 5,000 EUR for artistic creation, development, implementation and presentation (production costs); 3,000 EUR for possible and relevant artistic collaborations or specialised mentoring (e.g. collaboration with a chef or artistic mentor); and up to 3,000 EUR for travel.
