In the midst of these turbulent times, the Begehungen Festival is organising its 21st edition under the theme ‘Protest’, to be held in Chemnitz, Germany, from 15 to 28 August 2024.
Under this motto, an exhibition will bring together 20 to 25 works by international contemporary artists, which will be complemented by a festival programme with concerts, readings, lectures and performances. The exhibition is open to all genres of visual art (such as installations, photographs, videos, drawings and paintings).
The aim of the festival is the artistic examination of different forms of protest and resistance as well as the visualisation of protest movements in the present day, but also of past decades across the globe. The focus is on reflecting on social systems and structures as well as analysing discourses of domination.
The 21st edition of the festival will take place at a location that is closely linked to the protests in the GDR 35 years ago: the founding building at Charlottenstraße 52. The festival is also an official part of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Chemnitz programme.
Each artist may only submit one work and it is possible to apply as a group (although the exhibition fee is paid per work).
Participation in the exhibition will be remunerated with an exhibition fee of 300 EUR (gross) and shipping costs will be borne by the organiser. Conceptual and/or participatory works can be realised with a maximum material allowance of 700 EUR. If there is a need for coordinated assembly and dismantling by the artist or assisting persons, travel costs to and from the venue will be reimbursed and accommodation will be provided free of charge (maximum 10 days).
The following applies to performances: If it is ensured that the performance can be performed at the festival venue on at least 16 August, 17 August and 18 August, a total of 450 EUR (gross) will be paid. In addition, travel and accommodation costs will be borne by the organiser.
