Dezentral > Open Call for Hallstatt AIR Programme (Austria)

Hallstatt AIR is an artist in residence programme that offers a selection of Austrian and international guest artists the opportunity to realise contemporary and interdisciplinary art projects during a stay of several weeks in Hallstatt. The first implementation of the future biennial event series will take place in the summer of 2021.

The programme format is historically linked to the summer retreat that emerged during the Founding period, when not only the aristocratic elite, but also artists retreated to Lake Hallstatt to use this secluded and multifaceted place as a source of strength and inspiration for their work. The newly launched project aims to artistically, as well as critically reflect not only past, but also ubiquitous situations and site-specific regional perspectives for the future.

The project, organised by the cultural association Dezentral, uses existing potential such as local work spaces and exhibition areas and makes new spaces accessible to the public. As a special highlight, a show of the artists’ work will be realised in the private rooms of Grub Castle, which have been opened especially for this purpose.

Five working scholarships will be awarded to national and international guest artists, and one Japanese exchange artist will be invited. Applications from all contemporary art genres, including crossover (interdisciplinary) approaches – from photography to theatre, film, music, performance, installation, and visual art – are explicitly welcome.

The essential concern of the support programme is the experimental exchange of the invited artists with each other and with the place Hallstatt. This includes interventions with the local audience, as well as with cultural institutions and initiatives. Regional discursive themes are to be artistically taken up in the form of ‘field studies’, thus opening up new perspectives and dialogues.

The duration of the residency is one month. All artists work on site at the same time:

  • Working period: 19 April – 20 May 2021

  • Remuneration: €1300 per AIR.

The essential means, such as accommodation, workplaces, as well as equipment, if necessary, will be provided to produce art in the new and unique ambience of the Salzkammergut. Due to the interdisciplinary orientation of the artists invited for one month, the work show will have a festival-like character. This will be followed by a two-week exhibition in organised temporary spaces in the municipality of Hallstatt. Furthermore, the artists will be supported during the production phase and the results will be publicised by means of extensive public relations work. Travel costs will be refunded up to a maximum of € 300. Optimal networking opportunities are offered through a well-organized infrastructure on site.

Deadline: 17 March 2021
