Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio > Artist in Residence (Japan)

jp

Since 2014, Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio has been organising an artist in residence programme for international artists working in the field of visual art. In 2020, the programme focuses thematically on the notion of ‘moving’. ‘Can the movement of imagination, technology, and spirit be an alternative to the physical movement of artists? Is it possible to manage AIR without actually moving? What does moving mean anyway? What is waiting after having moved?’

This residency programme consists of two separate but linked phases.

  • Phase 1 (18 November 2020 - 24 January 2021): Without taking any flights, the selected artists will move from their residence (usual base) to Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo-city, Hokkaido, Japan. As part of the application, artists will have to share a ‘movement plan’ for this phase. Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio welcomes plans that involve other people and organisations (such as residency programmes and art centres) that can form part of the route to Sapporo.

  • Phase 2 (25 January - 5 March 2021): After 60 days of movement, there will be 40 days of studio work at Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio.

Alongside coordination, advice and technical support, Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio provides:

  • Up to 300,000 yen (~2380 EUR) budget for accommodation while traveling, use of studio and other artist in residence facilities during the programme period.

  • 300,000 yen (~2380 EUR) budget for 60 days activity during Phase 1.

  • 200,000 yen (~1590 EUR) budget for 40 days activity during Phase 2.

Production budget (various expenses such as materials) for presenting the residency’s end result, up to 150,000 yen (~1190 EUR).

Applicants must have a nationality other than Japanese and live in a country other than Japan. (Foreign artists living in Japan and Japanese artists living overseas are not eligible.) The programme is open to individuals and groups, though the level of support remains the same.

Deadline: 16 October 2020
