Awagami Factory > Awagami Artist in Residence (Japan)

The Hall of Awa Japanese Handmade Paper has provided a place for over 100 artists, students, education workers and groups from around Japan and the world with a place to research, create, and present their work. The Awagami Artist in Residence programme is unique because it offers resident artists an opportunity to use the Awa handmade paper manufacturing methods and techniques that have been passed down for generations in Yoshinogawa City, Tokushima. Resident artists also have access to facilities in the adjoining Awagami Print Lab (a print studio with equipment for inkjet printing, intaglio, lithography, and letterpress printing) and an indigo dying studio, enabling them to pursue a high level of creative work. The hall staff also provide support for the artists’ activities in the form of expert advice on all aspects of paper, assistance with production work, access to related print resources and materials in the in-house library, and other, less tangible forms of support.

The next residency period runs 20 November – 22 December 2020. Applications are open internationally, but Japanese artists living outside Japan and non-Japanese artists living in Japan are not eligible. The programme supports art that incorporates washi paper as an integral component of the finished works (printmaking, sculpture, painting, photography, etc.). Selected artists are expected to complete one (preferably more) artworks during the residency, and to contribute one (or more) artworks created during residency to the Awagami Paper Museum (‘Hall of Awa Japanese Handmade Paper’). The resident will also participate in local community outreach programmes including an artist lecture and school visit to engage local people in art education.

The programme provides:

  • Travel expenses up to a maximum of ¥150,000 (~1200 EUR) for artists based outside Japan, or a maximum of ¥60,000 (~480 EUR) for artists within Japan.

  • A per diem of ¥5,000 (~40 EUR) for daily expenses during residency.

  • Lodging for the artist for the duration of the residency in a house or apartment very near Awagami at a nominal daily rate.

  • A maximum of ¥30,000 (~220 EUR) to pay for production expenses (research, materials, exhibition installation and removal, etc.) deemed necessary by the host.
