Glasfabrik > Festival STADT/TT FINDEN (Germany) > Call for projects

Over a 10-day period this September the festival STADT/TT FINDEN will test the concept of interdisciplinary, cooperative and experimental work within the !eld of the expanding city. Artistic interventions und theoretical discourse will generate results that are only possible through interdisciplinary collaboration. Contributions from local as well as international speakers, workshops and cultural events will support this. Accordingly, the festival will be a prelude to the long-term development of the Glasfabrik.

The Glasfabrik provides plenty of space for diverse experimentation. Once planned as a machine factory, the site has about 5,000m2 of usable space, characterized by industrial halls and a representative administration building, the Kontor.

After 20 years of vacancy and vandalism, initial reuse and renovation is now in progress. The Kontor and the MainHall, comprising half of the site, will accommodate the festival. Group sessions and conceptual workshops will take place in the former once building, while the daylight-flooded Main Hall will be the central area. Consisting of a large rectangular, approximately 1.800 m2 space with a height of 6m, several skylights evoke the appearance of an industrial winter garden.

The organisers are looking for up to 5 teams, who are working on the phenomenon of the expanding city and who would like to implement a project in the Glasfabrik. The teams need to include at least two practitioners from different disciplines.

Architects, sociologists, artists, geographers, urbanologists, choreographers, musicians, performer or others, are all welcome, as long as they are interested in advancing their own project ideas through collaboration with others.

For example around such questions as:

  • How can a growth process be collectively controlled - “a city for and by all”?

  • What scenarios/ideas/utopias around new forms of co-habitation in the expanding city are imaginable?

  • How does the expansion of a city aspect the life of its citizens?

  • What experience of urban transformation processes in other regions could be useful references for the citizens of Leipzig?

The format of the work can be freely chosen, but it must become tangible and perceptible at the festival. The following

3 categories should serve as orientation:

  • action/performance

  • installation/object

  • scenario/utopia

The specifc location for the implementation of each intervention will depend on the concept. Installations that challenge the physical context of the Glasfabrik are welcome (floor plans can be sent on request). The work can include the surrounding urban area, but it must ultimately feed back into the buildings. During an initial phase of input and exchange (LAB) each team’s project sketch will be evolved. Implementation of the project will follow in a second step, accompanied in parallel by temporary public and open workshops.

The organizer of the call is the D21 Art Space Leipzig, a non-institutional project-based space and network, and th Octagon e.V. - Raum für Architektur und Urbanes, platform for architectural mediation in Leipzig. Participation is open to  individuals or groups from any country. Teams should not consist of more than 5 persons.

To enter, the completed documents  must be submitted via e-mail. The projects will be selected by a jury of members of the Glasfabrik Festival Committee accompanied by two further experts. Selected proposals will be realized in the implementation  period from September 1st - 9th, 2017 with the administrative support of the festival team. Slight changes regarding the  timeframe may occur, if both sides agree. For realization of the chosen projects, a budget of maximum 1.000 EUR is provided.

The sum contains remunerations for concept and realization. The teams will be responsible for bringing the technical equipment,  if necessary for implementation, but will be supported by the festival team if possible. The budget per team will be dispensed regardless of the team’s size and cannot be extended.

The selected artists will present their works at the final event of the festival on Sep 9th. During the whole duration of the festival (Sep 1st - 10th), the presence of the artists at site is highly desirable. Overnight accommodation can be provided, as well as communal meals once a day. Travel expenses are covered up to 100 EUR/p.P.
