2009 Symposium "Performing Arts Report: International mobility and the status of artists in the performing arts"
On 4-6 May 2010, approximately 250 theatre and dance makers from Germany and abroad, scholars as well as representatives from the realm of cultural politics discussed "The Status of Theatre and Dance Makers in the Context of International Mobility" in Berlin’s Arts Academy. This report gives account of the discussions, speakers and participants.
The event was organised by the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI-DE), the Fonds Darstellende Künste, Akademie der Künste Berlin and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media in collaboration with the German Association of Independent Theatres (BUFT), Culture Action Europe and the Embassy of Canada.
The most important element of the discussion was the “Study on the Economic, Social and Legal Status of Theatre and Dance Makers in Germany”. The international framework of the symposium made clear that problems presented in the national study – for example changes in employment activity, insufficient social security or legal insecurity – are global developments and that above all economic and legal questions can’t be solved in a national approach. This publication describes problems, solution models and policy recommendations as well as the protagonists’ next moves in cultural politics.
