EU study report on projects using cultural expressions as a lever for employment, human rights, democracy...

The study, commissioned by the European Commission’s Directorate General responsible for development cooperation, aims to illustrate how cooperation projects involving cultural operators, cultural sectors of activity and/or cultural content can contribute to current EU development priorities, especially within the framework of the Agenda for Change and the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework.

More flexible Schengen visa rules: new proposal from the EC

On April 1st, 2014 the European Commission released a new proposal on More flexible visa rules to boost growth and job creation, which includes proposals to shorten and simplify the current Schengen visa procedures and the creation of a new "touring visa", particularly interesting for live performing artists. Results of the public consultation by the European Commission: Improving procedures for obtaining short-stay ‘Schengen’ visas

The aim of the consultation was to collect opinions on how to have more effective rules on family reunification at EU level and to provide factual information and data on the application of the Directive. The results are now online and highlight in particular the characteristics of the arts and cultural sector with regards to high mobility and visas issues.

In March 2013 the Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Farida Shaheed, published her annual report to the United Nations Human Rights Council, which is devoted to the issue of “The right to freedom of artistic expression and creativity”. This highly interesting report adresses the multiple ways in which the right to freedom of artistic expression and creativity may be curtailed - including by restricting the freedom of movement.

Book: Music, culture and conflict in Mali - by Andy Morgan, published by Freemuse

Freemuse are pleased to announce the publication of its first book, ‘Music, Culture and Conflict in Mali’, which is launched in a digital and on-demand paperback edition. The book takes an in-depth look at the crisis that overtook Mali in January 2012 and lead to a ten-month occupation of the northern two-thirds of the country by armed jihadi groups.
